Fall 2019 was an incredible semester for Advocates for Life!
For students on campus, we brought important and valuable resources and services to campus.
We offered free babysitting to parenting students, partnered with Daybreak to bring free ultrasounds, pregnancy tests, and STD/STI screening, connected a parenting mom with a job, and partnered with A Moment of Hope to give gift bags of resources to faculty and staff to share with pregnant students--there are lighthouses of hope springing up all around campus!
We shined the light on the issue of abortion through many public events.
Our tabling events informed hundreds of students on campus about
- Getting involved in the pro-life movement,
- How to serve the community,
- The importance of paid family leave,
- The science of when life begins,
- The impact of Roe v. Wade,
- Wearing the pro-life message,
- The Title IX protections afforded to pregnant and parenting students,
- How to support parenting students through babysitting, and
- The right of everyone to have a birthday.
We held public showings of October Baby and Unplanned.
We held a debate with College Democrats. (See here)
We received media attention for it all too!
- Opinion Piece we wrote (The Daily Gamecock)
- Coverage of our Debate (Carolina News and Reporter)
- Coverage of our #WearLife push (Carolina News and Reporter)
- Interviews of several of our Students (Carolina News and Reporter)
- Radio Story of a Mother we’ve helped! (The World and Everything in It)
We Engaged in the Political Discussion
We texted thousands of voters in support of pro-life legislators in upcoming elections. We testified in front of the South Carolina Senate Medical Affairs Committee in favor of the Heartbeat bill. We wrote legislators and held petitions for paid family leave.
We Engaged in Solemn Prayer
We participated in Life Chain and 40 Days for Life vigils, standing as witnesses to the horrors of abortion. We also stood as sidewalk counselors during abortion days at the local abortion clinic and witnessed women choosing life!
We worked closely with New and Old partners
We visited Daybreak and wrote letters of support to moms during Daybreak and Donuts, learned more about the ministry of A Moment of Hope, attended Daybreak’s 5K, attended SFLA leadership training workshops,
We expanded our network of campus friends by partnering with dozens of faculty and staff and joined together in an end of semester celebration potluck.
We expanded the reach of the Pro-Life Movement
We made inroads with the local highschooling and homeschooling community with lectures and presentations on how to be involved in the pro-life movement.
We launched a Chapter of LifeRunners at the University, devoted to wearing pro-life shirts while exercising!
We began outreach at Columbia International University as we start a pro-life sister organization at that University.
We've partnered with and consulted other pro-life student organizations and ministries--local, national, and international--on how to increase their engagement.
We had Fun!
Between Pizza Parties, T-Shirt making events, trips to shag dancing and the Greek Festival, all while wearing pro-life shirts and messaging, we truly shared the joy and hope of our message on campus and in the Columbia Community.
From the whole staff and leadership team, thank you for an incredible semester and we are excited for what the spring will bring! If you are interested in seeing us succeed, please consider donating to our organization! Every little bit goes a long way towards helping pregnant and parenting students and shaping the culture of life on campus!
