Classes may have ended, but Advocates for Life is still busy this summer!
Planning
The executive board met at the beginning of June and has begun planning extensively for next semester! Plans include fundraising with Daybreak, sidewalk counseling with A Moment of Hope, booth volunteering at the State Fair with South Carolina Citizens for Life, a fall debate with College Democrats, and more!
Lobbying
One of our officers, John Mark Porter, was invited by Students for Life of America to spend two days in Washington, DC with students from Colorado, Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, and more lobbying for paid family leave policies.
These policies (The CRADLE Act and the Economic Security for New Parents Act) would allow parents to take time off after a birth or an adoption to bond with their child. In that time they would take money from the Social Security system without penalty and in return delay their retirement by commensurate period of time.
Families living paycheck to paycheck in low-wage positions and who see the birth of a child as an end of that little subsistence would now have the opportunity to continue to have a source of income after the birth or adoption of their child and as they take time to recover.
Fundraising
The annual Midlands Gives fundraiser took place on May 7th as finals wrapped up and we were proud to be present in support of A Moment Of Hope as it raised more money than any other organization featured! Other partners including South Carolina Citizens for Life participated in the fundraising event!
New Developments and Looking Forward!
We were also excited to launch our twitter account (@uofsc_for_life) and our website! More exciting details and additional plans will be announced in the coming months!
On the horizon is the National Right to Life Convention coming July 5th and 6th to Charleston! Members are encouraged to attend and can register here!
